Product description
Fire steel with magnesium body as fuel and a Ferrocerium type rod that sparks when scraped, igniting magnesium swarfs.
You scrape off magnesium, a pile about the size of a raisin, (the silvery stuff that makes up the whole block) and then you pull the knife or scraper against the dark side to ignite the magnesium.
Gives an extremely hot fire/spark that easily ignites wood and the like. Since this small fire burns for a second or so, it's easy to ignite the fuel, even if it's a little damp.
Works whether it's cold or wet.
A scratch blade is included . You get to unlock the chain and remove the scratch plate. Use the serrated part to scrape off the light magnesium, then use the flat part to draw sparks from the dark rod. However, it is easier to use a knife. The scratch pad should only be seen as an emergency reserve and requires extra training.
There is some protective varnish on the dark rod and the scratch pad is painted and the paint needs to be rubbed off on the edge you are using. A knife is always easier to use, but works well with the scraper as well.
It should be added that people fail to use this with the scraper. You should commit at home. If you are weak in arms or mind it is best to use a knife to get sparks.
The fire steel can withstand long storage, but if they are damp for a long time, the fire steel can corrode and leave a white powder. If you are going to store the fire steel for a longer time, make it dry.
