In the Nordic region, reindeer skin has been used as a saddle pad for centuries and is still appreciated today for its natural combination of shock absorption, insulation, and flexibility. The air-filled hairs act as a springy layer that reduces pressure points and helps distribute the weight of the saddle in a gentle manner. Many riders find that a reindeer skin pad offers a more stable and natural connection than modern synthetic materials.

Whole skins – shaped by nature and easy to customize

These reindeer skins are whole skins, not cut-out rectangles. You can use them as they are or trim them to any shape if you prefer a more customized contour. In some parts of the country, reindeer skin has historically been called “vojlock”, but today the word usually refers to shaped saddle pads.

How to use the reindeer skin for best functionality

Place the skin with the fur in the direction of the hair along the horse's coat – fur side against the horse and leather side against the saddle. The reindeer skin should be used directly against the horse's back. If you still want to use a saddle cloth or pad, it should be placed between the reindeer skin and the saddle, not between the reindeer skin and the horse.

For saddle use – not decoration

These skins are specially selected for saddle use. As a natural product, they vary in shape, density, and color, and may have perfectly normal cosmetic details such as asymmetry, minor fur rips, thin areas, color markings, or small patches. This does not affect the functionality and is a natural part of a genuine reindeer hide. If you are looking for a decorative hide, we have that too.

Size and fit

Each skin is unique, and the dimensions naturally vary. The length is usually within approximately 100–130 cm and the width within approximately 60–90 cm.

Naturally tanned – traditionally alum-tanned skin

The reindeer skins are alum-tanned, a traditional and environmentally friendly method that results in a soft and functional saddle skin. They are not chrome-tanned. The reindeer come from grazing areas where they roam in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and the variation in color, shape, and pattern is completely natural.
