Perhaps the lantern's primary purpose is to drive moisture out of the tent. Especially in winter time, this is a big problem that is quite difficult to deal with. With a UCO and good ventilation, basically all moisture can be driven out of the tent instead of condensing and in the long run making the sleeping bag and tent wet.
